02. King Manu developed the country
This king who brought the names of Manu Dūwa, Mandu, Simandu and Palesimandu to the country considered the whole world as his kith and kin.
The port near the city of Manu came to be known as ‘Manu tota’ (the port of Manu) and it became world famous as a trading port.
The tank of King Manu which was built by keeping the terrestial waters enclosed with dams came to be known as “Monnekulama”
The tank came to be known as ‘Vap’ meaning that which holds (“Va”) water (‘ap’) and also ‘Kulama’ true to its meaning.
The native region of this son of the Sun who came to be called ‘Rōson’ came to be known as ‘Rōhan’, ‘Rōhana’ and ‘Ruhuna’.
The island was divided into three regions and the two other regions were named as “Maya” and ‘Pihiti’ as a mark of respect to the two other heroes who took part in the contest.
The land where these three chosen men (manūs) contended displaying their skills in martial arts and where Manu emerged victorious was named as Manutiya (presently Mantai)
King Manu did not remain in the city of Manu throughout the year and visited the hill country for recreation and physical well being of himself and army.
The king’s forces were always located in a camp on top of the mountain and hence this city came to be known as ‘Senkadagala’.
The saying that a peasant is fit to ware the crown when the mud on his body is washed away may have originated with this coronation of King Manu.
