Victory of the Prince.

By marching to war, as uncle Taraka never thought, Price Mahasen emerged victorious through the wisdom of Ganisuru.

Prince Mahasen, who earned the honorific ‘Vel’ because he walked with great speed paid his respects to the remains of his Uncle.

The Suras were at peace when the body of King Taru whose fame had spread across the seas to India was burning on the pyre.

After the cremation with tearful eyes, Prince Kanda declared this day to be marked as the night of great sorrow from year to year.

Thus another era dawned for the Sun clan which was initiated by King Manu.

The earth tremored in a strange manner at the auspicious moment when King Mahasen ascended the throne initiating a new era.

The Sinhala people at that time considered it to be a sign of his spreading power over the entire earth.

The Sun flag which was shining brightly in the palace of King Taru Piyum, appeared in the middle of the city of Kataragama like unto the actual Sun.

The Peacock and Cock flags which were waving on either side of the Sun flag seemed to show the status of Provincial Kings when he became the supreme ruler.

The night of great sorrow

On completion of one year after the death of King Taru, permission was granted to hold the ‘Night of Great sorrow” for the second time.

The day on which the sorrow on the death of King Taru and the victory of the Siva lineage occured come to be known as the night of Great Siva (Maha Siva Ratri)

This ends the twelfth canto which relates the story of the battle between Taru and Kanda and the manner in which King Taru sacrificed his life to keep his lineage and about Maha Siva Ratri.”
