11. The quarrel of the Princes consequent to the ‘Sayanwara’

A tree full of branches suddenly fell across the road, obstructing the Royal procession which was proceeding to Kataragama.

The spears which rose above the forest on either side of the road, looked like a barricade and a war cry was heard from the forest.

When Prince Kanda’s people looked around, disturbed by this sight, Ganisuru alighted from the vehicle and said thus aloud;

“Do not kill the other people in the group. The leader must come forward like a real man and test his strength in the proper way.”

As Ganisuru said this, Prince Sarit came out of the forest with his sharp sword and stood erect.

Princes Ruwanmalee looked at her cousin’s face and said,” Brother, are you out of your mind? Turn back and go home like a gentleman so that you would not cause a blemish to our Piyum family.”

The cousin listened to the sweet words of his cousin that surpassed the chirping of birds and replied thus.

“can I go back home accepting defeat without causing a blemish to our Piyum family? Dear Princess do not think I have gone out of my mind. If one thinks in a sensible manner there is one way in which the disgrace can be suppressed.”

Saying so, Prince Sarit cut his neck with his sword with lightning speed and the ground was covered with blood.
