‘Sayanwara’ (selection of her own groom)
This pretty Asura Princess by the name of Ruwanmalee was of a beauty that befits the queen of a Universal King.
King Taru got the idea of making this princess the wife of his nephew Prince Sarit and leaving his Kingdom to lead the life of an ascetic.
King Siva was determined to go to the forest to lead the life of an ascetic, after handing over his kingdom to Prince Mahasen whom he wanted to make Princess Ruwanmalee’s husband.
Ruwanmalee’s father took steps to hold a ‘Sayanwara’ to protect his kinship with both royal families of Kalutara and Kataragama.
Princes from Various parts attended the sayanwara and displayed their skills in the military arts. But they proved futile with the appearance of King Mahasen.
Prince Sarit who saw that his desires were not being fulfilled got up and walked away saying that he knew what to do.
The Prince Kaňda swiftly left for his city taking with him his victory at the Sayanwara and his bride.
Thus ends the tenth canto which relates how at the Sayanwara Prince Kanda won the hand of Princess Ruwanmalee whom he had acquainted with on his way.
