Godess Sarasavi

Princes Sarasavi shone amongst the four brothers Taru, Viru, Suru and Nala like the peri carp of a lotus flower amongst the four petals.

Sarasavi was well versed in poetry, music and speech and was of great wisdom and it looked as if she had acquired four hands.

She was incomparable at that time having earned the epithets of Bagapati, Savn[a]napati and Saraspati.

The knowledge and ethics of the Helese rose to a high standard due to this Princess Sarasavi who was virtuous and fortunate.

She was the world’s first nurse who gave the gift of health to the world and was like unto a large river which branches off giving water to other regions.

This queen kept on her lap, the head of a helpless ‘Chandala’ (Low caste) woman who was suffering from a virulent fever and attended on her with compassion.

She came as a god mother giving everyone blessings with kind words and made people scholars with just a glance from her.

Having gained fame the world over with her skill in all arts, she led a life of celibacy after having led her husband to the path of asceticism.

Sarasavi’s husband was an ascetic by the name of Ganga Muni who consistenly led a life of an ascetic on the upper part of Kaluganga.

The son whom Sarasavi bore to Ganga Muni captured the attention of the uncle King through his skills.

Powerful Sarasavi’s son Sarit who grew up like a son of Great King Taru became the heir to the throne.

Thus ends the ninth canto which relates the story of how King Hayagiv’s dynasty ruled at Kataragampura whilst King Hari piyum dynasty ruled from Kalutota which was known by the name of Sandagal Nuwara.
