07. From King Bali Junior to King Hayagiv

King Bali junior, the son of King Bali the Great (Maha Bali) became king and passed away after working for the welfare of the people for thirty four years.

The lineage of King Bali spread throughout Lanka and there lived in the city of Manu, a king called Hayagiv.

It is said that Mahanama Thero cut off at will certain facts which were known in detail when he wrote the Mahawansa.

Here too many facts which were known in detail have been summarized for brevity.

If is like King Ravana’s “Daňdumonara” which sets out from Wariyapola and touches down at Guwangoda (presently Kuwankodi) across the shores (In India)

The story of the great dynasty which commenced with King Manu came directly to King Hayagiv excluding all detours.

This King Haygiv of the Manu lineage was crowned in the pre Kaliyuga era of 8016.

‘Sasthiri’ calamity from India

The King fled from the city of Manu to Ruhuna, in the face of a calamity which came from India two years after he ascended the throne and never returned to the city of Manu.

A cruel King by the name of Sasthiri from India set upon the country with his forces in order to plunder the wealth of the country.

King Hayagiv who took up abode in Kataragama, awakened the Asuras and returned to vanquish the enemy.

But the King remained at Kataragama to reign over the entire country whilst he entrusted the administration of the city of Manu to his Commander-in –chief.

This able king began the task of serving the people and the sasana from the top of the mountain which was later known as ‘Vëdihitikanda’ in Kataragama.

Because of the six hill tops in Kataragama, this King became famous as Hayagiv meaning six necks to the body of fame.
