The birth of the city of Mandaram
When Vara Mandatu heard by arrow letter about the death of his father, he was overcome with grief and came hastily to Ruhuna for his father’s funeral along with his Asura army.
The physicians who know the art of preserving the dead bodies (embalming) did their job to perfection.
As king Vara Mandatu reached the city of Matis his feelings were aroused by a message he received from the North.
Enemy attack
The king who heard that a hostile army had set foot on Dambakolapatuna (presently Sambiliturai) hastily prepared for war.
He sent his Commander-in-chief to the North to direct military operations until his father’s funeral was over.
The king caused a Commemoration city to be built around the tomb where his farther’s body was placed.
To this day the city is known as Mandaram Nuwara which means the sacred city where Mandatu’s remains have been deposited.
Vishnu II entered through the port of Dambakola and marched victoriously to the South devastating villages and cities on his way.
Commander Abirak marched forward to stop the march of Vishnu II to the city of Manu.
Vishnu had to retreat in shame after having lost in the battle which he fought from his camp on the land of Ranamuduwa (presently Iranamadu)
The Asura army struck with vengeance on the retreating Sura army so that they would not return for some time.
This ends the fifth canto that relates the story of the birth of the city of Mandarama and the manner in which the enemy threat from the famous Vishnu was repulsed.
